Durham Divas

Durham University Cheerleading Squad

About the Team

Durham Divas are the cheer, dance and stunt squad representing Durham University. We enter regional and national competitions and provide support for Durham uni sports teams. You do have to be a student at Durham University to join the competitive squad, but all university college members are eligible. Tryouts for the competition team happen within the first few weeks of October (see the tryouts page for more information).

We are always looking for new Divas. No experience necessary! If you would like to know more about the team contact us today. Enthusiasm and a willingness to work hard are more important than ability. If you want to get involved - get in touch!

Durham Divas are also available for any private functions and university events. Please contact us  if you would like us to attend your event

" I tried out for the divas in my first year, looking for something new to do (and I'd seen bring it on and thought it would be fun!) and can easily say that it was the best decision i've ever made . The thrill of coming off the competition mat, and winning a trophy is something I've never before experienced and now can say it's the best experience I've ever had! Through cheerleading I've made some of my closest friends. Cheerleading is something I look forward to every single week and I'd encourage anyone and everone to get involved, you won't regret it!!

What is Cheerleading?

Cheerleading is a sport which is relatively new to the UK. The main events providers are the British Cheerleading Association (BCA) and FutureCheer. Cheerleading teams can be very varied in their focus; Some dance, some only cheer for sports teams and some enter competitions. The ones who just focus on competitions and are not affiliated to a sports team or college are often called AllStar teams.

University cheerleading is growing year on year within the UK and many teams are now at a standard where they can compete in the USA. BCA and FutureCheer run yearly university cheerleading competitions, and most competitions now have seperate university divisions.

Durham Divas are a competitive squad, and aim to enter 3 competitions during the academic year (although we'd love to do more, we have a student budget and 2.1s to achieve!).

Competitive cheer routines consist of a balance of stunting, jumps, dance, gymnastics and chants. To answer a few FAQs: yes  we do throw people in the air, and yes  the cheer smile is obligatory!
